{"id":2064,"date":"2022-01-26T10:20:56","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T10:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/172.104.169.106\/?p=2064"},"modified":"2022-03-18T07:40:56","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T07:40:56","slug":"nft-based-fantasy-football-card-firm-raises-680m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https://uk20201.com/blog\/en\/nft-en\/ex\/2064\/","title":{"rendered":"NFT-based fantasy football card firm raises $680m"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/976\/cpsprodpb\/27B7\/production\/_120576101_footy-gettyimages-1297203469.jpg\" alt=\"NFT\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>NFT<\/strong><\/strong>&#8211;<strong>French firm Sorare, which sells football trading cards in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), has raised $680m (\u00a3498m).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NFT-based cards are used by fans to create fantasy football teams which can then &#8220;play&#8221; each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding was led by tech investor Softbank, with ex-England international Rio Ferdinand also putting in money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NFTs are controversial, with concerns over financial risk and environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An NFT is a &#8220;one-of-a-kind&#8221; digital asset that can be bought and sold like any other piece of property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with crypto-currency, a record of who owns what is stored on a shared ledger known as the blockchain and maintained by thousands of computers around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-56371912\">What are NFTs and why are some worth millions?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-58585342\">OpenSea admits insider trading of NFTs<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-58399338\">Fake Banksy NFT sold through artist&#8217;s website<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Players can buy cards from Sorare at auctions, or fans can also auction cards they own to other players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorare claims $150m worth of cards have been traded on the platform since January. The latest investment puts its value at $4.3bn (\u00a33.15bn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As NFTs, the cards can also be sold on platforms such as OpenSea and Rarible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorare says it has partnerships with more than 180 football clubs and has 600,000 registered users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of players including Spain&#8217;s Gerard Pique and France&#8217;s Antoine Griezmann also invested in the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm recently announced a deal with Spain&#8217;s La Liga and told the Telegraph it hoped to have &#8220;something to announce&#8221; about the Premier League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"subheadline-14\">Fan crypto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some journalists, charities and fan organisations have begun to question if crypto-assets and sports mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorare isn&#8217;t the only business to have deals with clubs featuring crypto-based assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clubs such as Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester City and Paris St-Germain already have arrangements with a firm called Socios to sell crypto-currency-based fan-tokens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm promotes tokens on its website as a way to &#8220;influence decisions of your favourite teams, unlock VIP rewards and access to exclusive promotions, games, chat &amp; a superfan recognition&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But because the tokens can be traded, some fan organisations worry clubs are encouraging speculation in crypto-currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leeds United Supporters&#8217; Trust, for example,\u00a0was critical\u00a0of the club&#8217;s decision to reach an agreement with Socios saying fans would be entering a &#8220;crypto-currency ecosystem, something which many may have very little knowledge of&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If football chooses to bring unregulated crypto-currency into the game, we believe that clubs also need to provide education and guidance on the purpose and risks associated.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"subheadline-22\">NFT worries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NFTs are also controversial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the technology used, maintaining a blockchain requires considerable computing power with a sizeable carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in traditional investing, financial impropriety and crime are a risk, but the protections for consumers are generally less robust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also concerns about a lack of regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently OpenSea, the largest digital collectable marketplace, revealed an employee used inside knowledge to buy NFTs before they were promoted on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEO Devin Finzer said the incident was &#8220;incredibly disappointing&#8221; and did not represent the team&#8217;s values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insider trading &#8211; where individuals use non-public knowledge about a company for financial advantage &#8211; is illegal in most regulated markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the NFT market does not have such restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.TOWN\uff1a<a href=\"https:\/\/u.town\/en\">https:\/\/u.town\/en<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NFT&#8211;French firm Sorare, which sells football trad [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2065,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[614],"tags":[522,520,415],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.10 -
